Hurghada: Cairo day trip by flight, pyramids, Sphinx and museum
Museum: GEM or Tahrir, by option
Both kinds of tour visit Giza and the Sphinx in one day, most of them a museum too. The difference is the night: the bus spends it on the road, the plane only cuts it short.
The short answer
Take the plane if you can afford it and want to sleep at least part of the night in a bed; take the bus if the price matters more than rest. The flight tours fly about an hour each way and bring you back the same evening. The bus tours drive about 6 hours each way, leave between midnight and 2 in the morning and return in the early hours of the following night.
The bus costs a quarter to a third of the flight. Going by the published schedules, the time you spend in Cairo itself is similar. The German Federal Foreign Office advises against overland travel at night in Egypt (as of 2 November 2026).

Cairo is about 450 km from Hurghada by road and about an hour away by air. The tours on both sides go to the same places: the pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and, on most of them, one of the city's museums, usually with lunch. Both tables below list the bookable tours on each side; our pick for each kind of trip follows under them.
Domestic flights from Hurghada to Cairo and back are part of every tour in this table. Sorted by number of reviews; tap a column header to re-sort.

Each of these tours stands out on one point. All tours on this page are described further down.
Collected before dawn, about an hour in the air each way and back at the hotel the same evening. You choose the Grand Egyptian Museum or Tahrir, and entry to Giza, the Sphinx and the museum is listed as included.
The same operator's flight day with a different museum choice: the Grand Egyptian Museum or the Royal Mummies Hall at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the latter from 6 people.
By people carrier or coach, with Giza, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple, a barbecue lunch and Tahrir or the GEM. Museum entry comes only with the options that include it, and the day ends with a shopping stop.
Giza, then the churches and the Ben Ezra Synagogue of Old Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, by bus. The inside of the Pyramid of Khufu is in the title but booked as an option.
Open a card for the itinerary, the museum, what the price includes and the cancellation terms as the listing gives them.
Flights both ways, Giza and the Sphinx, lunch and one museum of your choice: the Grand Egyptian Museum or Tahrir.
A day trip from Hurghada to Cairo with a domestic flight each way, about 80 minutes out and 75 minutes back. A representative with a sign meets you in the arrivals hall in Cairo. The day covers about 2.5 hours on the Giza plateau with the panorama point, the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Sphinx, a guided museum visit and lunch with a view of the pyramids.
You choose the museum when booking: the Grand Egyptian Museum, or the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, which runs from 6 people. If the return flight is late, the listing adds Khan el-Khalili, Old Cairo or Cairo Festival City as time allows. The itinerary also has a 30-minute shopping stop in Giza. The order of the stops can change with flight times, traffic and daylight.
Pickup at your hotel in Hurghada early in the morning; Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay are listed as pickup options, Marsa Alam as an add-on. Pickup details come by WhatsApp or email the day before.
Taken from the tour listing on the booking platform. The museum, the entry tickets and the pickup surcharge for towns outside Hurghada can differ by option, so check the option you book.
Flight tour with a choice of the Grand Egyptian Museum or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.
A flight day to Cairo from the same operator as the hero tour, with a different museum choice: the Grand Egyptian Museum, or the Royal Mummies Hall at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (from 6 people). The listing says it is the only flight day trip from Hurghada that includes the Royal Mummies Hall.
After about 45 minutes to the airport and a flight of about 75 minutes, the day covers the Giza plateau with the Great Pyramid, the panorama point and the Sphinx, lunch with a view of the pyramids, the museum and a shopping or workshop stop in Giza. If time allows, the listing mentions a Nile cruise or a short tour of Old Cairo as options. The order of the stops depends on flights and traffic.
Pickup at your hotel in Hurghada early in the morning. Details come by WhatsApp or email the day before.

Flight tour for up to 9, with the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square or the Grand Egyptian Museum by option. Non-refundable.
A small-group flight day to Cairo, limited to 9 participants. After about 45 minutes to Hurghada airport and an hour in the air, the itinerary lists 2 hours in the museum of your option, a 30-minute stop at a papyrus institute, lunch at a local restaurant, 3 hours on the Giza plateau and a second 30-minute shopping stop before the flight back.
The museum depends on the option: the Grand Egyptian Museum or the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, and there is also a pyramids-and-Sphinx-only option without a museum. Another option adds entry inside a pyramid. The listing calls the shopping optional, with no obligation to buy. This tour is non-refundable.
Very early pickup at your hotel in Hurghada. Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga as an add-on.
Taken from the tour listing on the booking platform. The museum, the entry tickets and the pickup surcharge for towns outside Hurghada can differ by option, so check the option you book.
Private flight day with lunch, Giza and the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square.
A private flight day for your own party. A driver takes you to Hurghada airport, and in Cairo a driver waits outside the airport. With an Egyptologist guide you visit the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square and Khan el-Khalili, with lunch, before the flight back.
The highlights name a "Great Egyptian Museum" while the description describes the old museum on Tahrir Square; one guest had the guide switch to the Grand Egyptian Museum on request. The listing mentions a camel ride, which is not included. One guest found the "bazaar" was a small shop rather than Khan el-Khalili itself.
Pickup at your hotel in Hurghada. El Gouna and Sahl Hasheesh for a surcharge.
Taken from the tour listing on the booking platform. The museum, the entry tickets and the pickup surcharge for towns outside Hurghada can differ by option, so check the option you book.
By people carrier or coach, with Giza, the Valley Temple, a barbecue lunch and Tahrir or the Grand Egyptian Museum by option.
A day trip by road in an air-conditioned people carrier or coach. After an early pickup you drive to Cairo for the Giza plateau with the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, a barbecue lunch at a local restaurant and the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square or the Grand Egyptian Museum, depending on the option. A Nile boat ride is optional, and the day ends with a shopping stop before the drive back.
The options decide what is included: general admission or entry inside the Great Pyramid, and the museum with or without entrance fees. The listing does not give the driving time; one guest counted about 14 hours of driving for the round trip.
Early pickup at your hotel in Hurghada by a car or van with the Nice Tours logo. Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Safaga and Soma Bay for a surcharge. The operator confirms the pickup the morning before.
Taken from the tour listing on the booking platform. The museum, the entry tickets and the pickup surcharge for towns outside Hurghada can differ by option, so check the option you book.
Big-coach tour to Giza with the Grand Egyptian Museum or the Royal Mummies Hall.
A day trip in an air-conditioned big bus from all Hurghada hotels. In Cairo you visit the Giza pyramids complex with photo stops and the Sphinx, have lunch and spend about 2 hours in the museum of your option: the Grand Egyptian Museum, or the Royal Mummies Hall at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization from 6 people. A Nile cruise can be added.
The highlights mention entering one of the pyramids, but the burial chamber entry is not included. The includes list names visits rather than entrance fees. A stop at a local workshop is part of the day, and while the bus waits for the convoy the group visits a papyrus museum or an essential-oil factory.
Early pickup at all Hurghada hotels; El Gouna and Soma Bay are listed as pickup options. The pickup time is confirmed the day before.
Taken from the tour listing on the booking platform. The museum, the entry tickets and the pickup surcharge for towns outside Hurghada can differ by option, so check the option you book.
Overnight van for up to 9, with the museum of your option and two shopping stops on the itinerary.
A small-group bus day for up to 9 participants, with about 6 hours overnight by air-conditioned van each way. The itinerary lists a short drive through Cairo, 2 hours in the museum of your option, a 30-minute stop at a papyrus institute, lunch, 2.5 hours on the Giza plateau and a second 30-minute shopping stop before the drive back. Entry inside the Great Pyramid can be added.
The museum is in the title, but it depends on the option. With the pyramids-only option you wait for the group during the museum visit. There are also options with the Grand Egyptian Museum and with a 30-minute quad bike ride. The listing calls the shopping stops completely optional.
Pickup in Hurghada late at night or very early in the morning. Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga as an add-on.
Taken from the tour listing on the booking platform. The museum, the entry tickets and the pickup surcharge for towns outside Hurghada can differ by option, so check the option you book.
Bus tour to Giza, Old Cairo and Khan el-Khalili; entry into the Great Pyramid as an option.
A bus day without a museum. After the pyramids of Giza with Khafre and Menkaure, the tour goes to Old Cairo for the Hanging Church, the churches of St Sergius and St Barbara, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As and the Roman fortress, then to Khan el-Khalili, with lunch. Soft drinks and water are served on the bus.
The title promises the inside of the Pyramid of Khufu, but the entry is included only if you book that option. The includes list names visits rather than entry tickets for Giza. While the bus waits for the convoy, the group stops at a papyrus museum or an essential-oil factory. A Nile boat trip is offered as a group activity; you can stay in the car if you do not join.
Pickup at your hotel in Hurghada. Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga as an add-on. Details come by WhatsApp or email the day before.
Taken from the tour listing on the booking platform. The museum, the entry tickets and the pickup surcharge for towns outside Hurghada can differ by option, so check the option you book.

|---|---|---|
| Leaves the hotel | Usually between about 3 and 7 in the morning | Between about midnight and 2 in the morning |
| Travel time each way | 60 to 80 min in the air, plus airport transfers and check-in | About 6 h by road on most listings |
| Back at the hotel | Same evening; one operator gives 22:00 to 23:30 | Between about midnight and 2 o'clock the following night |
| Nights affected | One short night before the trip | Two nights mostly on the coach |
| Price | The higher price, flights included | A quarter to a third of the flight price |
| Main risk to the day | A delayed or cancelled flight | Traffic and long night drives |
The bus tours leave Hurghada between about midnight and 2 in the morning; two listings give a 2:00 pickup and 6 hours on the coach, so you reach Giza around breakfast time. You spend that night sitting up, and most of the second one too, because the drive back takes as long. Drivers on one tour hand out pillows, and several listings ask you to bring one. On the flight tours the driver comes between about 3 and 7 in the morning, depending on the departure; one operator's guide gives 03:00 to 04:00 for the pickup and 05:00 to 07:00 for the flight. You get a few hours of sleep before and a full night after.
The plane does not buy you many more hours at the sights. On the published ranges, the flight tours land in Cairo early in the morning and take the evening flight back at about 19:00 to 20:00; the bus tours arrive in the morning and leave Cairo in the late afternoon or early evening. In both cases the day in Cairo usually covers a museum, lunch and the Giza plateau. What the flight saves is about 12 hours on the road, and the tiredness that comes with them. Some bus tours also lose time on the way back: two listings from one operator fill the wait for the convoy with stops at a papyrus museum and an essential-oil factory.
A bus tour costs roughly a quarter to a third of a flight tour; the live prices are in the tables above. The flight tours include the domestic flights and the transfers at both airports. Look at the inclusions on both sides. On several bus tours the entry tickets for Giza and the museum come only with the option that includes them, so the lowest price shown may be without entries. None of the tours here has the inside of a pyramid in its base price; where it is offered, it is an option at extra cost, even on the bus tour that has the inside of the Pyramid of Khufu in its title.
The German Federal Foreign Office advises travellers to avoid overland journeys at night, citing low road safety and frequent fatal accidents (travel advice as of 2 November 2026, unchanged since 29 September 2026). The bus tours to Cairo drive at night in both directions. The same advice notes that the overall situation in the country is stable, with partial travel warnings only for North Sinai and remote desert and border areas. The UK Foreign Office (updated 27 October 2026) advises against travel to the Libyan border area and North Sinai and against all but essential travel to parts of South Sinai and the Western Desert; Cairo, Giza and Hurghada are not among the areas it lists.
The flight tours depend on two domestic flights on the same day. The German Federal Foreign Office notes that flight disruptions are possible because of the situation in the Middle East (as of 2 November 2026), and one listing for a flight tour warns that flight schedules, traffic and security checks in Cairo can change the timing. None of the listings we read says what happens if the return flight is missed or cancelled. If you have a flight home the next morning, ask the operator before you book, or leave a day in between.
For Luxor, the other long day trip from Hurghada, there is no plane option in the tour market: every package goes by road, about four and a half hours each way in a van. The tours are compared on luxorfromhurghada.com.
Reviews of flight and bus tours from this page, critical ones included. On the bus, guests write about 14 hours of driving and a pickup around 1 o'clock at night; the drivers get praise for pillows and careful driving. On both sides the same complaints come back: perfume and papyrus stops that eat into the museum time, guides who push their own plan, and guides who ask for the review before the day is over.
“This was a great trip! The flight was safe, and everything was thorough. It is a very long day so is tiring and fast pace. […] Our guide. Sherif was great.”
“Pyramid was the best bit, however there is so many negatives that outweigh the positives, the communication was poor, we was taken to 3 shops where people try getting you to buy their expensive products and pull nasty faces when you say no. Definitely not worth the […]. Not even halfway through the trip we are looking to book tickets back to our hotel. Absolutely disappointed with this day trip. 5am pickup and not back till 11pm”
“Hisham and Noira were very friendly and accommodating. Hisham drove us 14 hours round trip from Hurghada to Cairo and offered us pillows to sleep on and chewing gum and made sure we were comfortable throughout. Noura was very friendly and she gave us information at every stop, making sure that we were having fun throughout. I would recommend”
“the two drivers we had and transport were amazing , we had the bus to ourselves , and even though a long drive , they did plenty of toilet stops and they were careful drivers . However the actual tour was rushed […] After it was sales time , a perfume and papyrus making place , after was the museum . […] in total we had about 1 hour with guide & 20 mins on our own […] at the end of the tour the guide gave me WiFi took my phone and wanted me to do the feedback in the van , I said I'll do it in my own time , tooo pushy !”
“Our guide Abbas was very friendly and showed as many things with great enthusiasm. I would definitely recommend him. Overall a very good short Trip experience if you are not staying in Cairo. Worth the long drive to and forth”
“The trip was very hard because the bus was driving already around six hours plus transfer from the hotel so you get picked up at around 1 o’clock and arrive in Cairo at nine […] Teachers pushed us through the museum in one hour showed us the main things and that’s all also at the pyramid. […] At all if you want to see Cairo for less money, it’s OK but if you’re really interested in cultural book 2 day trip”
Reviews written by guests after their day in Cairo, as shown on GetYourGuide, each under the tour it was written for. Shortened reviews are marked […].
About 6 hours each way on most listings, for the roughly 450 km by road; a travel guide gives 5.5 to 7 hours depending on traffic and stops. There are police checkpoints on the highway, so carry your passport.
Between about midnight and 2 in the morning, so that the coach reaches Cairo in the morning; two listings give a 2:00 pickup. They come back in the early hours of the following night.
Usually between about 3 and 7 in the morning, depending on the flight. The operators send the exact time the day before; one operator's guide gives 03:00 to 04:00.
Not much more. Going by the published schedules, both kinds of tour spend a similar part of the day in Cairo and visit the Giza plateau, the Sphinx and usually a museum. The flight saves the long drive and the nights on the coach.
The German Federal Foreign Office advises against overland travel at night in Egypt because of low road safety and frequent fatal accidents (as of 2 November 2026). The flight tours avoid the night drive.
The tour listings do not name the airline. Several Egyptian airlines fly between Hurghada and Cairo, and the operator books the seats with the names you give at booking, exactly as in your passport.
